The Decorah Community School District's new PK–2 elementary school continues to make strong progress as construction moves from site preparation into vertical building construction. Following community approval of the 2024 bond referendum, the district celebrated the project's groundbreaking on May 12, 2026, with students, staff, community members, board members, and project partners gathering to mark the beginning of a transformational investment in Decorah's future. The new facility is being designed to provide modern, student-centered learning environments featuring flexible educational spaces, enhanced security measures, improved accessibility, and updated infrastructure for the district's youngest learners.
Since construction began in March 2026, crews have successfully completed several critical early phases of work, including site mobilization, demolition, utility relocations, storm sewer improvements, grading, and the installation of rammed aggregate piers to support the building foundation. The project team completed ground stabilization work ahead of schedule, creating valuable flexibility for subsequent construction activities. Throughout spring and early summer, foundation excavation and concrete work progressed steadily across multiple construction zones, allowing crews to efficiently prepare the site for the building's next phase.
Today, the project has entered an exciting new stage as structural steel and precast wall panels begin to rise from the site, giving the community its first visible look at the future school. With major site and infrastructure challenges successfully addressed and significant foundation work complete, the project remains on schedule for completion prior to the 2027–28 school year. Community members can already see the building taking shape as construction crews continue transforming years of planning and community support into a state-of-the-art educational environment for future generations of Decorah students.
